Short Summary

Both the allies and the axis powers want Portugal’s wolfram (tungsten). Feeling Germany might lose the war they must pay in gold, which they do stolen Nazi gold looted from Europe and concentration camps. The British, Americans and Germans try to outwit each other and get the most wolfram.

At the end of the war, the banks of Portugal are filled with gold. What happened to the gold is questionable. Salazar after the war doesn’t rebuild Portugal as he doesn’t like to spend money. Some feel there is still a hoard of gold hidden somewhere in Lisbon as in my story. This is resolved.

Development Pitch

There are two narratives. Matt Barnes (Tom Cruise) is an aging MI6 operative who is thinking of a career change. He is given a war diary in Lisbon that belonged to the head of the largest banking dynasty in Portugal during WWII. As he and a wannabe secret agent (Antonio Banderas) are chased across southern Europe by unknown assailants, he reads the diary and the story of the birth of modern-day Portugal and the four horsemen of the apocalypse (Leo Di Caprio, Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Matt Damen) is told, in the second narrative. The bad guys think the diary holds a clue to a hoard of stolen Nazi gold still hidden somewhere in Lisbon. They are chased through six scenic locales the Algarve, Seville, Marbella, Malaga and Bucharest and barely escape each one. Finally in Madrid, the leader of the bad guys (Tommy Lee Jones) is impaled on a fence in a bull ring by a bull and the chase is over. By now, we know the story of the four horsemen but what about the gold? Matt takes the night train back to Lisbon which is actually where the story begins. It ends with a larger-than-life Hollywood ending a la The Mummy in the Placio di Commerce complete with mystery submarines, hoards of gold and 200 Nazi stormtroopers.
